
DeWitt began her stage career at the age of 13. When she was 13 DeWitt started performing on stage. She graduated with an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. In the following year, as she was performing in summer productions, the director convinced her to enroll in UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she was employed as a secretary until her television debut on the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was taught by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that they have never did meet. DeWitt's role as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 period is among her most famous. She was cast in the pilot episode of the show and later employed. Janet also appeared in the episode of The Ropers in the year 1979. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the finale of Three's Company's 1984 season. Then, she appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then, she stopped acting for many years. The stage was her first time back to the stage in June 1991 when she played a part in an Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress also appeared in Spring Fling, a 1995 TV comedy. A character based upon her, voiced by an actress, was featured in the 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain.
